The UK government has announced plans to cut spending by up to 25%; this will effect severely on the cost of living for each and every citizen. In this environment, we need to find savings where we can and make changes today to secure a more financially stable potential future. One area where we can make huge savings is the in the cost of motoring; with rising fuel prices it makes sense to find a more suitable source of energy.
So where is the good news? A trusted alternative fuel has already been here, Liquid Propane Fuel, it is now achievable to convert cars in such a way as to modify the existing vehicle fuel systems from single energy (petrol) into bi-energy (petrol & LPG) engine systems. So what are the LPG conversion costs for those of us who are looking to modify our existing vehicles?
Firstly, let us outline some of the more general financial advantages of a car that runs primarily about LPG fuel. Because LPG is more green than diesel and petrol, the UK government has agreed to maintain lowered taxes on LPG, meaning that it is cheaper at the pumps. Currently, LPG prices are around half the price of diesel and 45% of unleaded petrol prices (AA Fuel Price Record September 2010); during writing, the exact costs averaged across the UK, are LPG= 66p Diesel= £1.20 and Petrol= £1.17. The distinction in price will carry on for the foreseeable future.
Next, LPG conversions allow vehicle owners to save money in other areas too. Once a motor vehicle has been converted, it generally produces less emissions; this means that the car falls into a lesser car-tax bracket, thus costing less. In addition, cars which run on bi-energy or dual-energy and which meet the necessary emissions criteria can qualify for exemptions from congestion fees - these can cost upwards of £5 a day so this exemption can be extremely beneficial for car owners.
Car conversions are inexpensive fairly, they're time efficient too - getting around 4-5 days to perform. LPG conversion costs start from as little as £1200, if you take into consideration the price of petrol and average annual mileage of 10,000 the conversion can pay for itself within the first year.
Moreover, cars which run on LPG hold their value better than standard diesel or petrol cars generally, meaning that the motor car will not depreciate in value to the level that it would prior to conversion. Cars that run primarily on LPG petrol have fewer maintenance costs, LPG is a cleaner energy than petrol and diesel, and does not leave as much of a deposit on the internal mechanisms of the engines, this means there is less corrosion, thus much less need to change or repair internal parts.
