Northern Lights - Fiction or Fact?

ayushisingh2393

The Northern Lights are known by a few just by their scientific name"aurora borealis", and also have been called a fascinating subject for many years. The Northern Lights are bright moving rings of colour found in the far northern skies. Since the Northern Lights are as beautiful as cryptic, they have caused lots of people-young and old-to become confused, asking questions, such as: What are the Northern Lights? How long are they here? Are these lighting dangerous? Etc.. There is a scientific explanation for the lights, in addition to a myriad of folkloric stories related to them.

What Causes These Lights?

You will find flare-ups and explosions in sunlight constantly, which extends plasma to the atmosphere at an extremely high rate of speed. This plasma-like thing from the sun reaches the earth's air within about 3 days. It then becomes trapped in the earth's magnetic field that encompasses the globe. This thing is kept very near the earth near the north (Northern Lights) and the south pole (there are southern lights, also!) , and is observable as waves of colour. The waves closest at altitude to the earth are blue, followed by green, and then the colour red.

The best times to observe the Northern Lights will vary depending on your geographical area. There is no predictor of when or where the Northern Lights will be observable. The additional north you live or are situated, the greater your opportunity to view the Northern Lights. Other common areas to find the Northern Lights are: United States, Canada, Northern Europe, Greenland, Alaska, and other northerly locations. The perfect season for seeing runs from October through to March, and some season's visibility is far better than others, and a definite, cloud-free nighttime is far better than its counterpart.

What Are The Folk Stories?

Since there are several stories, we can see the fundamental desire of the ancient man to understand and place meaning behind such an unbelievable occurrence.

Some stories designate the lights as a pathway for people who voluntarily expire or are killed, so they could get to the after-life through a hole in the skies.

Some stories say that noises are heard while the Northern Lights are visible. These sounds of the Northern Lights may be: spirits hoping to communicated with other people in the world; spirits playing football; and spirits .

Another myth, this one from the Algonquin, say that since the Great Creator was finished creating the Earth, he went to the north and lit fires which would remind his people that he had been continuously thinking of these.

Whether you think that the aurora borealis are a folktale or scientific truth, the lights of the north are attractive experience to partake inside. Many yearn to see them. Go ahead, have a trip to the northwest, and be your own judge of these secrets beyond those legendary lights.
